A crazy meeting deep in the Sri Lankan jungle

I was in the Sri Lankan jungle, surrounded by elephants and without electricity.

I wanted to share one of the craziest experiences of my life with you. It’s a testament to how fruitful meetings can be, no matter where you are, if you know how to engage with your customer and give them what they need.

A few years back, I embarked on a solo safari adventure in Sri Lanka. I met a random guy who took me to a remote safari in Yala. I ended up at a hotel so derelict and uncomfortable that two German travellers, including a pregnant woman, couldn’t stay there due to the risk to the baby. Amazingly, they gave me their room for free. There were no other tourists around, just a few very excited Sri Lankan people.

I had a crucial client meeting scheduled, but there was no internet anywhere due to a massive storm. After a frantic search in the middle of the night, I stumbled upon a raging alcoholic in the jungle who had a hand-powered modem. Desperate and surrounded by elephants and wild animals, in the most unconventional setup imaginable, I managed to power up and run the meeting.

Despite the chaos, my client had no idea of my wild surroundings. The meeting was incredibly stressful yet exhilarating and ultimately made a significant impact on my business. It’s a perfect example of the digital nomad lifestyle—full of challenges, excitement, and the satisfaction of delivering great work no matter the circumstances.

I wanted to share this story to inspire you and remind you that while this lifestyle can be stressful, trusting the process and focusing on delivering value to your clients can lead to amazing outcomes. Embrace the adventure, and you can achieve great things.

An epidural to remove a sea urchin taught me a lesson I’ll never forget. I travel a lot and love being outdoors and doing extreme sports. I love surfing and always try to be careful when I’m out on the waves. But one day when I went into the sea in Indonesia, I stepped on a sea urchin. The pain was intense, but the waves were so good that I decided to surf anyway. Unfortunately, this caused the spikes to penetrate even deeper into my body.
