Why I wrote this book
It’s been a long road, more than 15 years as a freelancer. I started designing decorations for government buildings when I was 17. I worked for lazy architects who wanted to pass off my work as theirs.
After that I had some pretty random jobs: I worked in factories, stacked fireworks in bunkers and waited tables for billionaires, but my passion was always design.
After working as a designer in various places, I finally got my dream job as a digital designer in a London agency, but the enthusiasm quickly faded. I felt like a caged animal, slowly losing my soul to a monotonous routine that no longer gave me any meaning.
I decided to give up my dream and start a new life full of adventure, discovery and curiosity, a life that would truly inspire my creativity. The only thing that stopped me from falling back into my routine was setting up a dodgy hostel in a remote location in Indonesia, which gave me enough money to live on and an occasional Bintang (Indonesian beer).
Since then I’ve travelled the world and got much further in my career than if I’d taken a normal route.
That’s why I decided to write this book. It’s a way to share all the thoughts, knowledge and lessons that have led me to do what I love, on my own relaxed terms.
